My 9 month old had really bad reflux when he was 6 months and had to have a surgery for it. I was then told to put a small amount of cereal in every bottle, especially at night. His problem has since been corrected, but my ped still says to put cereal in every bottle. Also, if reflux persists, there are meds safe for babies, like zantac, liquid, and prevacid, disolveable tabs, ask your pediatrician. I think all peds are becoming anal about cereal in the bottle due to the recent obesity statistics. Worse case scenario, he'll gain a little bit extra weight, but watch for constipation. I wouldn't worry too much, if you're only doing at night and it's only a small amount. Mom's usually know best. If it works for him, and isn't harming him, don't worry about it. Good Luck!

It is not a good idea to add rice cereal to a bottle at such a young age due to the risk of increasing food allergies and causing severe constipation. It is harder for a baby of this age to digest anything other than breast milk or formula. However, there is a specially made formula called Enfamil AR (added rice) which is supposed to help with this problem. I have no doubt that the rice cereal will fill him up more and help him sleep better, but it doesn't give him the nutrition he needs if he fills up on it without enough formula. Call your pediatrician and let him know what you tried worked and maybe they can give you some more pointers.

Cherish these days, they go fast!

Rice cereal in formula is a standard solution for reflux. Enfamil even makes a formula with the rice already added just for this purpose.
What "they say" can be misinterpreted. Technically, your baby has no nutritional need for rice cereal. You are using it to relieve his reflux.
I think most would agree that a happy baby and a happy mom are most important of all. Good for you!

I would say yes, Every baby is different. If it works then keep doing it and congrats on getting some sleep! Being a mom of a severly colic baby I know how precious 5 hrs of sleep is. I started feedng my baby cereal with a spoon at a very early age to try to get some nutrition in him... I didn't do the cereal in a bottle right away but Ishould have. They make a formula now by (Enfamil) especially for babies who spit up. So I say if it doesn't work why would they make a formula designed for that kind of problem???

YES! I think they must be! Because I had trouble with my little one and feeding sleeping etc. I was told by my mum to try a teaspoon of rice cereal in her bottle. And yes, for me it worked too! I didn't really want to but my baby's doctor said it wasn't a bad thing, just that some nurses and doctors don't recommend anything resembling solid food before 6 months.

Acid reflux is the only reason anything can go in the bottle besides formula. It leads to obesity, tooth decay, and it's a choing hazard.

It is mainly to keep parents from not teaching their kids to eat with a spoon and you have to have a bigger hole in the nipple of the bottle which is a choking hazard. There are a lot of formulas out there with rice cereal in them, try some of those

Reflux is the only reason to add cereal to a bottle that is supported by current research.

He may sleep better, and if it's being given for reflux that's fine. The concern is parents doing JUST so their babies will sleep or stay full longer, because they do stay full longer, but rice cereal is like junk food for babies. It doesn't have any nutritional value like breast milk or formula do.
