The makeup was part of the attraction; part of what made KISS, KISS. I'm a huge KISS fan, but I believe they wouldn't have reached the status they had if it was not for the makeup and the intrigue it brought to them.
Maybe the people who couldn't see past the makeup would have been fans because they couldn't take them serious. Maybe the people who were intrigued by the makeup wouldn't have been fans if they had not donned the warpaint.
I was a fan then, & I'm a fan now. For those who can't appreciate what KISS has done in the business needs to give their head a shake. Like them or not, they have been influential.

I used to be a huge Kiss fan back in the day, but everyone grows up. They did have alot of great music but I think that theynever would have made it close to where they are today without the makeup. Look at all their merchandise. Most all of it is based on them wearing makeup. And lets face it, without the makeup these are some ultra-ugly dudes. And someone does need to tell them that they are approaching 60 now and they are not 30 anymore.

No, they wouldn't have made it as big as they did without the makeup and the elaborate pyrotechnics on stage.
While KISS had great music, as you say, so did many other bands in the 1970s. But the bands who made it big were the ones who were performers. Remember, they were hitting their stride eight years before the debut of MTV. So they had to do something eye-catching without music videos--and it was built around the makeup on the album covers and a reputation for having elaborate stage shows. It wasn't enough back then to JUST have great songs.

KISS would never have reached their highs in the 70's without makeup. For one, they aren't winning any beauty contests, and for 2, it was their (so-called) satanic look and stage antics that got them 2/3 of their press, and as they say any press is good press. The more parents and preachers got up in arms over KISS, the more teenage boys wanted to listen to them.
That being said, KISS did write some good songs, and were decent musicians, and the benefit of their shtick is that 20 years later (I saw them in 1998) they still look and sound exactly the same since you can't tell they're in their 50's with all that makeup on. The show I saw was probably every bit as good as seeing them in the 70s.

Kiss ended up doing a few albums and a tour without the make-up. Kiss - Unmasked was one of those. They ended up going back to what got them there eventually. I'll never forget reading a review of their very first album in Rolling Stone when it was about to hit the stores in the 70's. I can't remember all of the article or who wrote it, but one line has always stuck in my head. "Someday, Kiss may be remembered for their music!" They put out some good music, made their mark for sure. That guy is probably kicking himself in the *** now.

I really don't think that KISS would have made it without the make-up. It is funny that when I was younger, KISS was ALL THE STUFF to me. I have seen some of their concerts on video recently, and I find them to be "not as good as I remembered". Paul used to be my crush (this was 25 years ago, mind you), but now I have to wonder what I saw in him. I recently heard an interview with Paul--he was so condescending! A big disappointment! I like Gene the most now (now that we are all old).

While KISS does have great music, I think that part of made them so popular (and one of my favorite all time bands) was the make up. But to quote Gene Simmons from an interview conducted shortly before "Lick It Up" (Ironically the album they chose to remove the make on) Gene had said "Taking off the make up would be the equivalent of seeing you child walk in on Christmas Morning, and removing all of the Santa Costume and telling him that Santa Claus doesn't exist" (paraphrased) but I will say that they had equally huge success out of make up as well

Well I have never been a KISS fan and I do not like their music (no offense to you) so I believe that without make-up and stage shows, they would not have gone anywhere.
