It may have corroded or broken. Normally the sink pipe connection is a flanged one that drops through from inside the sink and has a nut that tightens up against the bottom of the sink. So you may need to buy some new parts.

It sound like A. You need too replace the basket strainer. Or B. you need a new flanged tail piece. The basket strainer is the part that you see when you look into the bottom of your sink. The flanged tail piece is the pipe that attaches to the under side of the basket strainer with what is called a slip joint nut. Both parts can be purchased at your local hardware store.

sounds like the basket stainer if its right under the sink, and it should have a metal nut that should slide up to be reattached, if its the part going into the wall, you could go to your home parts store and buy a rubber connector to reattach it with, take a piece with you to get the right size, if its the piece that gos to the garbage disposal to the trap, take the piece with you to the home parts store and try to match it up, good luck with that one you may have to buy a new disposal to get the part,
