when the council gives you bags for recycling your garden rubbish they are always plastic and written on them is Do not place sharp items inside bag.

Too funny, but plastic can be recycled. So what they are telling you is to shred your garden rubbish by using more gas for the shredder. You are astute in noticing this, I give you a green thumbs up.

My council bags are green wide-top with big black handles, much like commercial ones. In some kind of woven material, maybe plastic or plastic mix.

lol....no I haven't noticed that. We have a special bin for garden waste, as well as the normal one, and also one for paper - so that's 3 large wheelie bins at the end of the garden, taking up space so we hardly have any garden left.

So find another way to rid yourself of them. Chop them and use for mulch is better.
