It is probably the planet Venus, the 3rd brightest object in the sky behind the Sun and Moon.

If it was the brightest thing in the sky (after the Moon) it will have been Venus. Venus varies in magnitude from - 3.8 to - 4.6 and it is therefore ALWAYS brighter than the brightest star, Sirius which is - 1.46

The only things that ever outshine Venus are supernovas (like the one in 1054 AD whose remnant became the Crab Nebula) and comets (Comet McNaught reached - 6 at peak in January 2007). But both of these are temporary phenomena and achieve their peak brightness for a matter of a few weeks at most.

If it is steady, it should be a planet, not a star. The light from stars keep flickering because of atmospheric thermal currents.

venus can only be seen at dusk and dawn--in the daytime, the sun is just too bright to see it, and at nighttime, the earth's dark side is faced away from venus.
