If it was the brightest thing in the sky (after the Moon) it will have been Venus. Venus varies in magnitude from - 3.8 to - 4.6 and it is therefore ALWAYS brighter than the brightest star, Sirius which is - 1.46
The only things that ever outshine Venus are supernovas (like the one in 1054 AD whose remnant became the Crab Nebula) and comets (Comet McNaught reached - 6 at peak in January 2007). But both of these are temporary phenomena and achieve their peak brightness for a matter of a few weeks at most.

If it is steady, it should be a planet, not a star. The light from stars keep flickering because of atmospheric thermal currents.

venus can only be seen at dusk and dawn--in the daytime, the sun is just too bright to see it, and at nighttime, the earth's dark side is faced away from venus.
