Somedays ago , I started taking lawn tennis classes & the points that my coach told me to keep in mind were:
1. During forehand , your left foot should always face the right pole of the net
2. During backhand your right foot shuold always face the left pole of the net
3. never wear shoes that have grooves or spikes on the bottom side , on a clay court
4. While throwing a serve your body weight should be on your toes
5. Even if you are a starter , always buy the racquet of a good brand , e.g. Yonex
6. Wear clothes that are comfortable & in which ur legs can spread wide for running
7. Your eyes should never get off the ball

To get to an advanced level of play, I'd assume under the right challenging conditions and with the right knowledge, between 3 and 5 years. You could enter tournament before that, by the way. For a national event where you'd meet some solid guys, say 5.0's, it could take longer than that, but that's if you are an adult or at least have the physical built of a young adult, say 16 an over. But, anyway, do it for fun and bother paying attention to how you do your stuff. If you do that, you'll seem weak in the beginning because throwing moonballs and pushing is effective against beginners, but, in the long run, you'll be hitting good shots and those who used to won the matches will loose them.

In addition, to what was said:

1. Practice your forehand and backhand by hitting cross court drills
2. Practice your tennis serves by targeting locations in the service box.
3. Practice footwork drills, ( aerobics, sprints to the net., cross step on volleys)
4. When volleying at the net, keep a short compact stroke with a firm grip.
5. keep your eyes on the ball, not so much on your opponent, look at Federer photos when he hits his shots.
6. Always wear a comfortable pair of tennis shoes for tennis.
7. Hit with partners who have varying styles.

i played for a year without lessons and came in top ten in my highschool team. (and no my team does not suck) I just practice at least 8 hours a week because theres a tennis court in my neighborhood and i practiced with friends who were about my level. So one of the cheapest, fun, and relaxing way to get better is just practice practice practice. Oh and some visual learning from tennis pros.

Learn to serve...That is the base for everything. After you have mastered that, and you don't need a partner to do it, work on the forehand timing and the backhand front-leg bend and follow through. Drop shots are somewhat instinctive and will come the more you play, but you need to play someone at your skill level AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE! If you love to play, it will be a pleasure!:D
