Easy, dump him.
You're enabling the behaviour, you need to break the behaviour.
Tell him that if he's not mature enough to handle it, you can no longer be friends with him. He's not a good friend if he judges you based on such a small thing.
In other words, if he's gonna keep being a jerk, he doesn't deserve your friendship. If he decides to grow up and be mature about it, then your friendship can resume.
Simple stuff really. Don't be friends with a bully.

I know it is against the law to make harrassing phone calls - I'm not sure what the law is about harrassing text messages, but you can try reporting it to your phone provider. The good thing about electronic communication today is you usually know the phone number of the person harrassing you.
As for it getting to you - if you are a lesbian, I don't know why it would bother you to be called one. If you aren't, then why care?
I've had yahoo trolls call me gay because I stand up for gays. I just thank them for the compliment and remind them that only homophobes are offended by being called gay and I'm not a homophobe.

If you're at school, speak to your headteacher (or any teacher you find especially sympathetic). If you're not at school, speak to the police. And keep the text messages – they're not only evidence of how you're being harassed, but of who's doing it, and the times of the day and night that he does it.

Threaten to get a restraining order. If he is harassing you like this, go to the police and have them investigate. Then, you may be able to get a restraining order. He will not be able to see you, talk to you, or send you text messages. If he does, he will break the order and will go to jail.

That's not good. That's very invasive. I don't know. Life is like that. You can't often tell who's your "friend" or not. Where do you draw the line?
Jesus said to love your neighbour. Don't get angry. It'll only add fuel to the fire and give him more to work with.

I'm not sure about america, but in the UK his actions would be a criminal offence under the anti stalking laws. It may be worth speaking with the police about him.

I would start with formal letter to him, then involve the police. These things escalate if not dealt with. Also... why does a jerk like this have your cell # anyway?
