Your choice depends on yourself. I like darker colours. Purples and blues. I wear with with suits for all occasions including job interviews because, I believe, they suit me.
For yourself the right sort of colour would depend on what suits yourself and your personaility. I don't like white shirts as my face is a little bit red, purple or dark maron tends to have a certain cool factor, while the solid blue (dark blue) says that you are more laid back, relaxed, but intense. I think with black it becomes too dark. Maybe not a dark blue, but an electric blue.
Maybe you could go with bright red or yellow or patterns, but you will probably not want to look at your photos in the future, even if you think you are cool now.
With solid colours I think it is best to go with ties that are of a similar solid colour. I know this is a little bit out dated, but looks great in photos and is still fairly popular and it looks like your dressed to party rather than the office.
Otherwise, match dark blue with light blue or light blue with dark blue.
I used to have a cool black tie (with some dark patterns on it) which could go with almost any type of shirt.
Have a hankerchief in your top coat pocket of a matching colour (either match your tie or your shirt).
If you want to do something different, try the southern gentleman shoelace tie (I can't remember the propername) and metal lapel tags.

If you wear a light blue shirt, wear a white, yellow, grey, or navy blue tie, either solid or diagonal stripes.
If you wear a navy blue shirt, wear a white, yellow, grey, or light blue tie, either solid or diagonal stripes.
Or if it's just a regular blue shirt, you can wear a white, navy blue, light blue, gery, black, or yellow tie.
I think that a white shirt would look nice, that way you could also wear any color or design tie. White shirt and black tie is classic, but you can do any color tie with a white shirt.
Have fun!

I'm sure you'll look smashing.
The solid colours all sound safe but a smidge stiff, I'd look for a tie that's not too busy but incorporates some colour. After all, it's a celebration!
Hope you have a great time.

Why not try to match your dates outfit with your tie? Find out what color dress she is wearing and look for a tie with that color included.

You could coordinate your tie with your date's outfit. Otherwise, a nice burgundy silk.
