can i save my antivirus update before i format my computer?

Yes, if you back the definitions file to another disk and then re-install it later. However, if you are going to reinstall an anit-virus program you may have to start from scratch. Since the definitions can be downloaded again there does not seem to be any point backing them up. It might save you a little time but that's all.
