They were born with special abilities - in the cab when the Indian driver is talking to the dude-who-can-fly, he explains his theory on why some people are special than others. It is during the eclipse moment.

I love that show!! My husband and I are faithful watchers. What I interpreted from the show is that the original HEROES were injected or given something as an experiment and that gave them their powers. Then, they can also have children who automatically are born with special powers too. (as evidenced by Micah and Claire....and even Peter and Nathan's dad had special powers too. I wonder if their mom does too and we maybe just don't know about it yet?) What I do not know is why each person gets a different power, and how the original people were chosen. I wonder if we'll find that out.

They are born special, but their powers are triggered by natural events(the eclipse)
Hiro, Parkman, Peter, Micah, Ted, Claire, and Most of Sylar's in series victims all received their powers after the eclipse, but the Invisible man, Nathan, Claire's Mom, Niki/Jessica, DL, Sylar et al. had their powers well before the series started chronicling the events of their world.
In X-Men their powers are latent until Puberty/highten emotional situations, But in Heroes the powers are activated by natural events(perhaps just eclipses, maybe more events as well)

I think they don´t need powers they have to trust theirselves to do their responsibilities and if they reach it then people says that they´re heroes

genetics, each of the hero's genes are the next step in mans next evolution,and each heri has a specific d.n.a. marker that was traced by the elder Dr.Suresh!!!
if you want to put in simpler terms...they are mutants,very simular to another group of hero's we alll know and love!!!

Its all because of genetic testing, as we found out in the show from Mohinder's researching his fathers information and findings.
