I don't see why a 30 month draft deferment would bother you.
Especially since most Mormons go on Missionary missions.
He was eligible for the Draft from 1967 to 1973.
So its not like he was dodging the draft.

Service can be many things, consider this, Mormonism is the fastest growing Christ based faith and France is on the front line of incursion if Islam into Europe, with rapidly growing families and a malcontented ghetto lifestyle that they cling to the European Muslims will soon have their wicked way with democracies in countries that welcomed them with open hearts and arms. The croissant, a pastry that was commissioned to celebrate driving the Muslims out of Europe might soon need to be recalled since the white Europeans are at a flat population demographic, while the Muslims are having five kids per family! Now who else has large families as a religious duty? Mormons! In the end it may come down to Mormons verses Muslims so if Mitt Romney created more Mormons in France he served us better then he could have killing a few more Vietnamese in that sea of bloodshed. I know which group makes better neighbors.

A deferment and being a draft dodger are 2 different things. This is something many republicans will have to come to grips with because they called Clinton a draft dodger when he had an education deferment (Rhodes Scholar)
On the other hand, They elected a deserter to office

Well, get over it. Do you have a clue how many of our "Patriotic Politician's" were able to avoid Vietnam?
George Bush's father was a Congressman in the Nam era. . . Bush Jr along with many political son's were able to avoid going to Nam by basically hiding out in the Air National Guard-chances were greatly slim they would go to war.
Not one son, nor grandson on the Armed service committee went to Vietnam.
Most of these "Pro War Politicians" never put a foot on foreign soil, except to take a vacation!
They say that "Texas" air national Guard was like a "Polo" club, and consist of many Dallas Cowboy football players also being able to avoid Nam.
I'll tell you who went though. My Brother, who was the only son of a "Divorced waitress." Yes,the "only" son. . .
Although both political parties are guilty of the above,I came name 2 off the top of my head that did go.
Al Gore's father was Senator at this time, and he also was "offered" the National Guard dig. Al Gore refused and did go to Vietnam, along with John Kerry.
According to the "opposition" these "2" did nothing worthy in Nam. Zero acknowledgment that they WENT, unlike our Commander in Chief, who hid like a scared puppy. . .

Mitt Romney followed the protocol of the times to qualify for his status although it seems like a tough duty station for any missionary, especially a young male, FRANCE???

Mitt, Dickie, Bill and Rush
Newt, Trent and Tom DeLay
Never served in the military
Not even a day
They all had their reasons
For avoiding the fuss
Even fat Limbaugh
Had a butt full of puss
And the village idiot
Failed to report
He’d just done a line
So lovely to snort
But they’re mighty brave
All wrapped in their flags
As they rant and they rave
Kids come home in white bags
They point their fingers
While claiming they’re pure
Unwilling to pay
Soldier’s wounds to cure
My brother’s names
Are etched in that wall
Brave men who served
Only to fall
And the right wing wackos
Have the guts to claim
That they’re patriots
It’s the liberals to blame
Hide your faces in shame
You Hypocritics and snakes
Like O’Reilly and Rush
You’re world class fakes

As a missionary for his church in sunny France during the Vietnam war, I would suspect he feared being a casualty of that war more than doing his obligation.
You have alot of war dodgers in his camp.
