my desktop just had a virus,i think a trojan. i got rid of it but now i have limited or no connectivity. i tried repairing but it says it cant renew my ip address. i also tried unchecking the 'show me the limited or no connectivity' in the properties section, still no internet. i also installed a patch, still nothing. i know it is not the router or internet service because i moved my computer from the house to another place. so what should i do?

sounds like a job for the Winsock fix program! Try running this: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

I fix computers as part of my job and this has helped out after removing more malicious trojans in the past.

Note: Once you have run this utility, you >may< need to reinstall your anti virus or firewall (depends which one you are running)

Hope that helps

1. Check the Network card's driver: Right Click My computer > Properties > Hardware Tab > Device Manager > Open "Network Adapters"
* make sure that there is no Red X on it (otherwise you need to reinstall the driver)
* look at your car'd properties to make sure there aren't any errors under "Device statuse" (if there are try to update the driver)

2. Try to change the IP settings to automatic:
Control Panel > Network connections > Right click the Local Area connection > Properties > In General Tab choose "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click the Properties Button > Mark "Obtain IP address automatically" and Obtain DNS Server address Automatically"
Why? because some routers demand specific values and you said that you changed it so that it doesn't connect via a router anymore.

""Limited or no connectivity"" means your router settings are probably messed up. read the Friendly manual and look for: Release and Renew DHCP.

Failing that, turn off your PC AND unplug your DSL modem for about 10 minutes then turn it back on. Re-boot and you should be fine.

If that doesn't work, call your ISP and ask them to manually assign a new "lease", they will know what that means.
