Soak seeds over night in water. Plant in 1 gallon containers. Wal mart grow lights - flourescent tubes. suspend directly over the pot. Almost touching it. As they grow keep the light about 1"-2" above the plants. Fertilize every 2 weeks.

You want the female plant. The only way to differentiate is when they bloom, flowers are distinctly different. They can grow 10' tall, but you can bend them and tie them down if they start to grow through the roof. good luck.

i have an allotment and the easiest things are runner beans, french beans, courgettes (take a bit of space so maybe 2 plants max.) ,mixed salad leaves,beetroot,-and strawberries are quite easy. there is a good programme on with Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall about beginners veg growing.Y ou can grow almost anything in pots so that could be a good starting point as its a manageable space.I have a book called The Allotment Handbook (just as suitable for gardens)-it runs thru the year telling you what you need to do each month. if you want to grow potatoes try them in a large thick plastic sack or bin-good idea for limited spaces. As a very 1st thing I'd sow some pots or rows in the garden of salad leaves or lettuce of your choice.Buy some tom. plants from a garden centre and put them in gro-bags.Then runner beans(they need to grow up some kind of support system-bamboo canes usually) theres a good website called allotments 4 all-has loads of info and you can ask questions also

back when i grew the sticky icky, to start out i sowed the seeds in a quart sized pot with miracle grow potting soil, cove rd the pot with a wax paper like the 1 the Sunday paper was delivered in and left it in my closet up on the highest shelf and left the closet light on. it acted like an indoor greenhouse . within a few days the plants were about 2 to 3 " tall and then i transfer ed them to a window area with good lighting and took care of them like a normal house plant, fert every 2 wks. to keep them from growing tall just keep cropping the top of the palnt and it will grow like a bush.
