Not having been raised in an English speaking country, we were instead exposed to what are termed "cuentos" or folk tales from world cultures... there was:
** La llorona
** Origin of sumer and winter
** Why we have people of so many colors (Nyamai)
** Bachelor and Python
** there were literally hundreds of stories

The stories were told nightly around a sort of camp-fire outside of our home. The adults and children would "gather round" and someone would tell an embellished tale, then another would follow and soon there had been several and by 9PM, the sun would go down and everyone would return to their grass and adobe hut.

Interestingly, b/c no one could write or read, stories told of our people, the ways of our people and how our people came and went over the centuries.

I remember them because they are now a part of the fabric of my being, they point the way often, keep me connected to the ways of my people and b/c they remind me of a time of innocence and care-free living (despite living under a dictatorship). This was our entertainment, as we had no radio,, TV, video games, internet, Wii, etc.

My grandfather on my mother's side "authored" (via the oral tradition) a story which I'm sure will be in our family for generations to come. One of these days, I hope to put it together in a childrens book. I worry about putting it in book form, though, as the story had a habit of acquiring slight changes every time it was told. In my personal version of the retelling of the story, I have embellished on some aspects of the story which my grandfather did not, and I KNOW I don't tell the story the same way twice. One time, I did ask him to record the story on a cassette tape which I still have. I think it would be fair to say that he definitely over-embellished the story for that recording, to much amusement of the listening audience. Well, thats the why, not the story itself. For that, you'll just have to wait until (if) I decide to try to get the story published.

The best story that I've remembered when I was still young was the story of King Midas & the Golden Touch because I really wondered why & whats the moral story & how would it affect to me if I am the King's daughter.

As a Child I was a favorite daughter of my father that's why I could easily reflect the story...

I half agree with Audrey and say the Giving Tree. It is about being slefless and is a good example of love for a child. It is better as a grown up reading it to my children.

Polly's P's and Q's. A story in an Enid Blyton book about a little girl who always forgot to say 'Please and Thank You'. So her mum cut out loads of 'P's' and 'Q's' out of cotton wool and every time Polly forgot to say 'please' she had a P pinned to her. Every time she forgot to say 'Thank You', she had a Q pinned to her.

Anyhoo, Polly wanted to go to a party but her mum wouldn't let her take the letters off until she earned it. After that, Polly didn't forget her 'P's and Q's' and one by one they came off...just in time for the party funnily enough.

I never forget my 'P's and Q's' now!
