my daughters mother was shot and killed in another state than where we reside what are my legal options in getting some kind of compensation for her as she grows up without her mom it sounds like it will only cost the shooter 7 yrs of his life as mo. only charged him with armed criminal action and unintentional homicide in the first degree 85%of that sentence is all he will have to serve in prison it has not yet gone to trial but after reading the statutes it looks like because it wasnt on purpose supposedly he will get a light sentence while my daughter lives the rest of her life without her biological mother even though we were never married how can i provide for her in the ways she deserves because of some punks negligable use of a handgun

Now I might be talking out my butt here, but I know of someone who got social security benefits until he was 18, because his father was killed. Also I dont know if it is national but here in Texas there is a victims compensation thing. I dont know how to get it, but if you a victim of a violent crime you can get money for things like therapists, moving, setting up a new life. Also I would DEFINITELY file a civil law suit agaisnt this person.

Well, you could file a Wrongful Death action, but I haven't heard they've actually collected anything from OJ Simpson on the judgment awarded for the deaths of Nicole and whatsisname, so you need to consider the likelihood that the shooter in this case will ever have anything worth taking.

Consult a lawyer to consider a wrongful death law suit, I beleave thier cut is 1/3 of the settlement.

See a advocacy group in the state of the crime.

hire an attorney on behalf of your daughter to sue for wrongful death. if he's a loser punk, though, he may not have any money for you to collect. look at oj simpson -- the goldmans and browns have spent so much money in court, but have never received a dime from oj despite the ruling in their favor.

You can take the shooter to small claims court. I would contact a lawyer, if I was you.
