As a parent, I felt I was between a rock and a hard place. Especially when it was something I would have to get involved with. For me the hardest thing (still is) to do is just simply listen, and not talk (preach or advise). We don't want our children to hurt or be scared or unsure and that makes us want to "fix" things. What kids need is a sounding board, not really to "fix" anything.
I would say its hard for kids to talk to their parents because they are afraid of their parents reaction, either negatively or just that the natural instinct is to jump in and take over.
The very hardest thing to do as a parent is the natural separation from your kids, before you know it they are not dependent and that sneaks up on you.
Not everyone is open to their kids saying "mom I just need you to listen, not fix it for me", and not everyone is comfortable with letting go of their children (or even know how to do it), so be gentle with your parents and keep trying.

It's a two way street. Our culture has really devalued listening skills too. There is a book that I use all the time with parents called "How to Talk so Kids will listen, and how to listen so kids will talk". Check it out-- it's written at a 5th grade level, so it's a one-day read, but the information is excellent.

Parents aren't approachable.
The parents don't encourage their kids to talk to them.
Parents might be grumpy or on other occaisions have rejected requests and ideas that come from their teens.
Parents can respond in unpleasant ways at times.
Perhaps this is only true for some folks.

Because once it's out, it's OUT. There is no going back, ever. And the thing that first somes into mind is "what if I get in trouble?" so, in order to avoid this, they don't say anything.
