My collection of Hip-Hop, Pop, and Rhythm & Blues is extensive ... now I want to build my collection of classic Metal and Rock.

What groups, and what songs, do I HAVE to include in my collection?

First Wave of British Heavy Metal and Metal Blade box set. That should be essental. Maiden, Priest, Scorpions are a given. Metallica up to Master of Puppets. Metal didn't exactly die off considering Last great metal album of the 80s is Queensryche "Operation Mindcrime" and the first one of the 90s was Pantera's "Cowboys From Hell". Plus Megadeth stepped up and put some great stuff out in the 90s.

Classic rock is all over the radio, classic metal, not so much.

If you really want to build it, I would look into the history or rock music for those 'must haves' or the bands that made their mark, check here http://www.history-of-rock.com/indx.html to get info on the early days with Bill Haley and His Comets, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly..etc.

Then you have The Troggs, Elvis, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Animals, Mamas and the Papas, Bob Dylan, heading into Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, The Who, Cream.

Next up, Led Zepplin, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, Queen, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pink Floyd, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, Van Halen....
through to Ozzy Osbourne, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Guns N' Roses, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard...

Then Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Green Day, Limp Bizkit, Korn, Marilyn Manson, up to Fear Factory, Slipknot, Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall..... and into the future.

Obviously I didn't get everyone but I hope it's a good guideline.

Led Zepplin goes without saying, The Doors, Aerosmith, ZZ Top, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Kiss, Eric Clapton, Rolling Stones, Beatles, A/C D/C, Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, Lynard Skynyrd, Pink Floyd, Rush, Van Halen, The Who,The Eagles, and U2, those are some of the usual suspects that you would find on a list like that. All of which are awesome.

Well, as far as Metal is concerned...

Kreator
Testament
Anthrax
Mercyful Fate (Don't Break the Oath is NECESSARY!)
Bathory
Venom
Celtic Frost
Hellhammer
Slayer (Hell Awaits is all you need, every other album is the same)
Death
Napalm Death
Exodus
Megadeth
Overkill
Savatage
Queensrÿche
Dio

Of course you could go with Iron Maiden, Metallica, blah blah blah... But they're so typical and really, anyone who is barely scratching the surface would know of them.

As far as rock is concerned...

Sex Pistols
Iggy Pop
Led Zeppelin
The Clash
The Damned
D.O.A.
The Doors
The Rolling Stones
Pink Floyd
David Bowie
The Who
Jimi Hendrix
Janis Joplin (A MUST!!!)
Big Brother
The Ramones
Bad Brains

I think you can take it from here...
