make sure you write down every order, even if you think you can remember it. repeat the order back to the guest. check back with the table about a minute after the food has been delivered to make sure that they have everything that they need. keep drinks full, smile a lot, and seem approachable!! waiting tables is hard work but it should also be fun!

smile, don't be fake but be yourself, check back at least five times throughout the customer's stay...even if you are just walking by the table and looking at their food and them, keep their drinks filled, write EVERYTHING down...i have a piece of computer paper i fold up into thirds...then i section that up into thirds (so the three columns are longest) and make seating charts for each table...this allows me to see thirty to fifty tables at once (depending on how many people are at each table). i circle what i need to bring out first and i star what I need to remember with the food....this is what has helped me earn at least 20% overall each day....it works. oh, and thank the customer for coming in and tell them to take care or ask them if they have any fun plans for the weekend...usually they like it when you show a small interest in them (but DON'T go overboard...don't look like a stalker). good luck. hope that helps.

Just keep the fundamentals in mind. Write it down if you have to and repeat it back to them. And keep in mind that they could just as well have eaten at home, so make it your priority to give exceptional service.

Here's a suggestion:

When trying to take plates away, do NOT ask the patron if he is "still workin' on it." When I am asked that in a restaurant, the tip is immediately cut in half.

Learn your menu. Listen closely to the patron and repeat what they asked for back to them to make sure you heard them right.

dont be over chipper, dont be glum, just be contempt while you work. check on your customers frequent. offer to get them something that doesnt cost them money. just be a nice guy.
