Every seed germinates at different lengths of time. There is no "average" length of time without describing what kind of seed you are referring to. Usually the germination period will be written on the seed packet itself. Most flowering plants and or vegetables germinate usually between 5 and 15 days, depending on weather and environment.

Una is correct. Try putting the seeds on damp paper towel, in a zip type plastic bag. Place in sunny (south) window and watch for sprouts. Transplant as they sprout.
