Being a carnivorous insect, the mantis feeds primarily on other insects. However, it is not uncommon for larger mantids to consume small reptiles and even small mammals or birds.

Females will be much larger than males. (After mating the female will bite the head off the male, then consume the rest of his body. )

Heres a site about them:

They are predators, you feed them insects. Big ones. The biggests mantises can actually catch and eat the smallest birds.

As far as sex, they are frequently sexually dimorphic (the girl is different from the guy) that should help you ID what you are hosting.

i believe they eat other insects and they like light, meaning at night (if you leave a porch light on, that is). i've caught one before, and no they don't bite. they just look a little awkward.
p.s. they like a soft light at nite, you probably won't see them in the daytime. so if you want to keep him make sure he has a place to go.

you care for it, by letting it live it's life in the wild, like it's supposed to do.
