Going to be applying stain to my fence which is going to change the color of it dramatically. My wife thinks we should also paint the sides facing our neighbors to the left, right and back of us... so both sides match.
I'm going to ask the neighbors to our right if we can do this. We've known them for years, used to rent from them (we wound up buying the house next door to them). I'm only asking them because the side of our fence facing them is the only "opposite" side that can be seen from the street. The sides facing the other two neighbors, we've never seen. For all we know they may have painted/stained those sides.
I'm of the mind that they can do whatever they want with those sides, even the neighbor who I plan on asking. My wife's big worry is sides not matching!

The fence was already up when we bought the house.

Every area is different: all zones have different rules but, to be on the safe side, ask first then you'll be safe. My neighbor put up a fence and didn't paint it, it looks like crap. My wife asked if we can paint it, he told her "your the one that has to look at it" we found out, he was right, so. What can I say?

That depends on whether the fence is on the boundary line or not. Has your property been surveyed, if so and the fence is on your side of the line then the entire fence is yours to do what you want with it. But if the fence is on the boundary line it is considered a common fence and you are only responsible for your side. It still would be a good gesture to talk to your neighbor and see how they feel about it.

If it's your fence, then you should want to paint both sides to preserve it. Why not use this opportunity to get to meet your other two neighbors. If they've already stained the other side, great. If not, explain to them you want to preserve the fence and ask if they approve of the color or would they want to purchase their own stain and do it themselves. Who knows, you may be living next to a future best friend.

If the fence belongs to you, you can stain the opposite side too.

If you built the fence then the neighbors should bear halve the cost of the maintenance. Tell your wife that the other side of the painting costs should be shared by the neighbors.

No, you are not responsible, but it would be a nice gesture to paint the other side (after asking the neighbors, of course)

think about it, there's no way you are responsible, if its your fence then you can paint it all you like, if its theirs then they cant just expect you to paint it, if you want it to match then just ask them!
