A standard SMS is 160 characters. Some phones can do extended text but this is acheived by stringing 3 normal messages together giving you a total of 480 charcters, which are charged as 3 messages by the network operator.

MMS you can send long text messages up to 1024 characters and most operators offer this at a lower fee than sending pictures, but check your operator before trying this in case they don't.......Vodafone do offer lower cost for text MMS than picture/audio/video MMS.

it depends on your phone.

when you go to write a text it should tell you in one of the corners in the screen how many characters you have left. my phone can use up to 450 characters for a text.
