You need to factor it, and then set each factor to zero to solve for each x that will make this statement correct. Like this:

(7x + 9)(x - 1) = 0

7x + 9 = 0 ======> x = -9/7

x - 1 = 0 =======> x = 1

You can check each answer by substituting each x back into the original equation to make sure they both give zero.

7x^2 + 2x - 9 = 0 can be factored as

7x + 9 and x - 1 thus giving us x = - 9/7 and x = 1 as the two factors.

7x^2 + 2x-9=0 ==> factors to
(7x-1)(x+9) = 0
7x-1 = 0 OR x+9 = 0
x = 1/7 OR x = -9

7x^2 + 2x - 9 = 0

Use quadratic formula to solve for x

x =( -b +/- sqrt b^2 - 4ac)/2a
a = 7
b = 2
c = - 9
x = (-2 +/- sqrt (2)^2 - 4(7)(-9))/2(7)
x = (-2 +/- sqrt 4 + 252)/14
x = (-2+/1 sqrt 256)/14
x = (-2 +/- 16)14
x = (-2 + 16)14 and (-2 - 16)14
x = 14/14 = 1 and -18/14 = -9/7
x = 1, -9/7 ==> answers

using the quadratic formula x= [-b plus-minus sqrt(b^2-4ac)]/2a with a=7, b=2, c=-9 the solutions are x=1, -9/7
