Wow, I could have written this question myself. I've been a legal secretary for 11 years now, but I have no idea what I want to do with my life (but that's because I'm tired of the law).

First, you need to ask yourself if you really enjoy the law. If you do, you can take a paralegal program (which should be available in most community colleges). The program itself doesn't take too long, and then you could have your certificate.

If you're even more tenatious, you could go to law school. There are plenty of law schools around geared towards working adults that are also accredited. Sure they don't have the same fluff that Harvard would have, but once you pass the Bar you're still a lawyer, right?

Otherwise, the sky's the limit. You're gaining basic secretarial skills being a legal secretary (typing, filing, calendaring, etc.) so you could be an assistant anywhere. If you firm is anything like mine you are also probably wearing many hats (ordering supplies, bookkeeping) so you could use those skills elsewhere as well. Being a legal secretary entails major multi-tasking abilities that can be useful just about anywhere in the corporate world as well and even though starting as an assistant may sound mundane, you've got only up to go from there.

Good luck to you.

Get your legal assistant's certificate and double your money. It's not much harder than what a legal secretary does and you make more money and can sometimes make your own hours! Might as well until you get out of legal completely..
