same as anyone else. some are good.. some really suck.

most dont talk to their client or explain what is wrong with their animal or what they are doing to fix it, well enough.

if your vet doesnt explain things in full - ASK.

you should know -

1. what is wrong with your animal OR if the vet is unsure, what they are doing to try and find out. (and vets are frequently unsure - this doesnt mean they are bad vets - animals cant tell us where it hurts like humans can).

2. what medication/treatment they are giving the animal, why it is nessecary and how it works.

3. how to look after the sick animal once you take it home. not just "keep him quiet", but explain medication, potential side effects, symptoms you might see and when you should see improvement.

if your vet doesnt do this, take your animal to another vet... or ASK.

I think that veterinarians are important parts of their community and help bring families together by keeping one of the most important members of their family healthy. They are devoted to what they do and are some of the most die-hard professionals if the medical field.

Why do you ask?

Vets are important to your pet's well being. But like our doctors, they don't always know everything. And it is harder for vets. They have to deal with all kinds of animals.

My dog was scratching himself to bits. The vets (I went to two different vets for this problem) kept insisting it was an allergy. After giving the dog steroids (which I didn't want to use but had to do something), a special diet, and medicated baths every three weeks, he was still scratching himself raw.

I did some research on the web and found that my type of dog (cairn) had to be groomed a certain way. I started to groom him properly and the problem went away.

I still go to the same vet, but I also try to be more informed.

I think that they have a very important job. People usually don't think of them as important or as smart as a doctor or even a surgeon. But think about this. Doctors only have to know about the human body. Vets have to know all about cats, dogs, rabbits, birds etc. Each animal has different insides which they need to know about for different operations. It takes many years to become a vet. The last I heard it was 7 years of uni. Don't think that a vet is a vet because they couldn't get the marks to study to become one of our doctors, they actually wanted to heal sick animals.

I think they are a godsend to pets and a friend to owners. After all, they have spent years educating themselves to help patients who can not speak for themselves and only to try to help animals live a better life and a longer one. Some are more knowlegable than others, some may even be greedier, and some may have a better bedside manner, but in the end, I think they are great and I am glad we have them when needed.
