As I learned years ago in a Drama class, when we watch anything in theater, we tend to put ourselves in the place of one of the main characters.
It is likely male gay people would be watching Titanic from the perspective of the Rose DeWitt Bukater / Kate Winslet character and female gay viewers would identify with the Jack Dawson / Leonardo DiCaprio character. Either way they decided to identify with the characters, they would still identify with one or the other and appreciate the story from a romantic perspective.
