You have to know how to pick it up or you'll hurt yourself (or look like a jerk not being able to move it).

Stand next to the seat where the bike is laying down. Face AWAY from the bike.

Bend down at your knees and grab the bike behind you.

Stand up and lift the bike up behind you.

That's the way to get the most power while keeping your spine safe from lifting injury.

1. depends if your under the bike and the peg is or is not embedded into your calf
2. providing you are out from under it depends on how big your bike is and the weight of it and the type of bike you are riding.

if its moto-cross bike no not hard at all. now if your talking something that is about the size and weight of a sportster, you can do it by yourself, along with pulled muscles and a hurtin back, anything bigger like the weight of a herritage that depends on how strong you are yourself.

9 out of 10 if you drop a bike and there is someone around you they will instinctively jump to help save the bike from hitting. if its already down they will instinctively help you to pick it back up. unless they are teaching you HOW to pick one up by yourself for when you are alone riding.

My last bike was a 1999 Honda Valkyrie, (750 lbs). I dropped it once; surprisingly it wasn't very hard to pick up. Maybe because my Adrenalin was pumping because I was so mad I dropped her.

Read disgruntled's answer.
He outlined the correct procedure for lifting a bike.
I saw a lady approximately 60 years old, 4'2", 95 lbs, pick up a Honda Goldwing in that manner.

it depends, on the bike and your strength. Mine is a sportbike about 400 lbs and I lift weights, so it's not very hard for me to pick it up. if you have a cruiser and are not very strong, you might not be able to.

unless you are strong and have a light bike I would think that gravity has the advantage, especially if your injured from dropping the bike. Objective is - shiney side up rubber side down.
