Boiling water will not distill it, unless you have a way to catch the steam and condense it into water again.

Were you wanting to make distilled water for your fish tank (guessing from what category your question is in)? Distilled water isn't good for fish. They do need dechlorinated water, which you make by adding dechorinater (available at the pet store or walmart's pet aisle) to tap water.

Distilling water at home is a little tough. Like some on here said distilling is the process of boiling off the water and collecting the steam vapor and condensing it back into water in a seperate container. You could build a distilling unit at home but without a good understanding of steam you could get seriously injured.

You can buy a DI filter or a small RO filter that will accomplish the same thing. You can use it in your freshwater tank but you have to adjust the pH and add in an essential elements supplement made for pure water. If it's a saltwater tank your salt mix will do this for you so no other doses are necessary.

With all my respect to my friends who answered to the question ..... Making distilled process is totally different. Boiling water Does NOT convert it into distilled water. I tell you how to make distilled water ........ First you have to boil water , Then Do any available method to collect the VAPOR of water (like receiving it in another pan or cup, preferably colder than the room temperature), when the vapor condensates, the resulted water (from the vapor) is distilled water

Boiling it will kill any bacteria, but won't distill it. The chlorine and other impurities will still be in it. You'd be better off just buying distilled water at the store.

If you are preparing water for a fish tank, all you need to remove is the chlorine. There are additives you can buy at your local aquarium store that you add to regular tap water that work just fine.

You can buy or make a still. Then all you have to do is pour in the water, turn on the heating device, and put a receptacle at the other end to catch the end product--distilled water.

You have to boil water and collect the steam. You need to heat the water so that steam is collected in a tube (or on a surface above what you're using to boil the water) where it cools, condenses back into water and drips into a collecting container. See the link below.

Just boiling water doesn't remove any impurities that are dissolved in the water.
