We get the afternoon sun and would like to put up a simple sunscreen in the evening. Would like to make something.

You can purchase shade cloth at the big box home stores in the garden shop. Grommets can be used to make hanging holes and then hang this from some type of frame you design.

Or if you don't have snow load in your area, a simple frame and then use 4 x 8 foot lattice sections for the roof. Snow is too heavy for the 4 x 8 lattice screens over winter.

Plants can create shade, but they take time to grow. Examples include various vines growing over the frame you design.

The new retractable shade canopies are better still as they allow light to enter your home up until the afternoon when you can extend the canopy and shade the patio.
