If you can afford to live in the hills, and get home before dark, it's usually ok, but Oakland is really a very dangerous city to drive through, even in the daytime. I as a kid used to go to concerts in downtown Oakland, and the last time I visited..... 3 years ago, I was so scared I couldn't get out of there fast enough... the car in front of me got carjacked right in the middle of town. I personally would rather sleep on the streets of san francisco than ever have to spend any time in oakland again.

Like any other place, it's got it's good spots and it's not so good spots. Don't let all the talk of violence freak you out. Oakland is great. It's big and spread out and has a lot to offer. Good transportation, colleges, museums, lakes, regional parks, diversity and the A's. And reasonable rents, S.F is nice to visit, but too expensive to live there.

No place is a bad place to live if you live there. I grew up in the soth side of chicago and i didn't think it was bad because thats all i knew. Oakland may be a city of crime in the media but im sure its also a fun place to live in.

Most of it is pretty bad. If you don't know the differance then you should not be looking there. General rule of thumb is that higher ground is better. Just on the otherside of hills, through a tunnel, highway 24 there are some nice small towns, Orinda, Moraga, and Layfayette, they are all nice and safe.
