I just bought a new laptop and would like to connect to my existing internet service (from Telus). I'm thinking of getting a wireless router and adapter. Does any wireless router and adapter work or do I need to buy only from the internet provider company? thanks.

You do not what kind of service you have for a connection, cable, DSL, what? I have a DSL appliance. I can hook any router to it via an ethernet cable connection. My DSL is also a hub so I can connect up to 4 computers and also a wireless adapter to set up a wireless network link. So far, I have not used the wireless port. So, if you have a connection which has an ethernet port as all DSL and cable modems have, you can use any router you want. Unlike my DSL appliance, most DSL and cable modems only have one connection port which means only one computer or you put in a router or hub so you can connect multiple machines. It will take a little configuratio on your part, but the configuration setup for a router is quite easy, just read the docs first. A router is an active device, with internal software which makes it work. A hub is a passive device which just provides several connection points. A hub is cheaper than a router, but then the router is a smart device which actively routes packets to the appropriate connection point. Be sure to invoke security if you make a wireless link otherwise anyone with a wireless adapter who is within range can leech off your network. Do you want an anonymous person leeching off your network and cruising child porn sites? Make sure you have security enabled for your wireless, if you choose to use it! Make sure you read up on the security features of wireless in the docs which will come with your wireless router/adapters.

By the way, none of this applies if you are using a standard telephone modem with a dial-up connection since dial-up only works with a single computer. With dial-up, networking computers does not work unless the computer is configured to be a "host" and be the server for your home network and setting up this kind of network in your home is beyond the scope of this answer.
