What's a polite way to tell someone that they need to shower, or that their breath stinks?

First, I would pull them aside to talk to them alone w/noone else around so I don't embarrass them further, then I would say something like, "I don't mean to put you on the spot, but I can smell bad body odor, and I think you may want to take a shower."

For the breath senario, I'd say, "Your breath smells funny, perhaps you should pop a mint, or brush your teeth...I, and other people can smell it, sorry to bother you."
