Here's where algebra comes in handy.
If susan's age last year is x and her age this year is x+1, and x+x+1=48
2x=48-1
2x=47
x=23.5
If Susan't brother is half her age and he is 24, that means Susan is 48. But that is impossible, because susan's age last year plus her age this year equals 48. So something is wrong in your problem. Did you copy it correctly?
