Wikipedia Extract:

Main article: Palestinian refugees
4,255,120 Palestinians are registered as refugees with UNRWA; this number includes the descendants of refugees from the 1948 war, but excludes those who have emigrated to areas outside of the UNRWA's remit.[21] Thus, almost half of all Palestinians are registered refugees according to these estimates. This figure represents Palestinian Arabs and not Jews of Palestine who mostly became citizens of the new State of Israel. Jews were expelled from and not admitted into the West Bank or the Gaza Strip, which came under Jordanian and Egyptian occupation respectively, from 1948 to 1967. UNRWA figures do not include some 274,000 people, or 1 in 4 of all Arab citizens of Israel, who are internally displaced Palestinian refugees.[22][23]
