Energy and blood supply is diverted toward the digestive tract. The same principles apply to cramping if you exercise or swim after eating. After digestion has started, the blood supply then increases to the rest of the body to disperse energy and heat. If you go out in the cold, then your body needs to also divert circulation to extremities, so there could be some compromise to either or both.
