a turtle cannot live without a shell. And they usually will die if their shell gets cracked as well. The shell is the only protection a turtle has. Think of it this way, a person cannot live without their skin. A shell is basically a turtles skin.

A turtle or tortoise is considered having both an exoskeleton (an external feature that helps to protect and support his body) and an endoskeleton (the internal bone structure). His carapace (the top shell) has his backbone and other bones fused to it. The bottom shell (the plastron) acts as a guard to his internal organs. Losing either of these warrants death.

It's a pitiful thing to see one homeless and naked, I tell ya. I have seen them on corners in the big cities and in parks, all strung out, wrinkly skin, all dried out and calloused looking, begging for their next meal. They aren't even embarrassed by their nakedness to try to cover up with a leaf or something. Just wish there was something I could do...

A turtle's shell is sort of like it's spine, so if it's shell fell off, it would be dead.
