It's a Latin name derived from the word for "laurel", most probably via the name of the Roman town Laurentium, which means "place of laurels".

Baby-namer.com says its "Man from Laurentium". Which i'd say is a reasonable explanation.

Many other names like Leonardo (my favorite in that category) and familiy names like De Poitiers used to tell where one person came from some centuries ago. I guess that could help decipher what kind of individual each was really without having to see him/her personally.
