What are good items to use to represent the conflict between kings and popes, the Battle of Hastings, and the Crusades? I have to make an artifact box for Medieval Europe and just can't think of anything for these.

P.S. - I need 3 items, not just one to reprensent them all.
Thanks for the help! :-)

Well a quick rule of thumb when an argument erupts over religious issues is SCHISM - - - a split, a divergence of ideas/

A good symbol for the fight between Kings & Popes would be a rousing good bonfire; burning martyrs. As another answerer mentioned, an Arrow represents the fatal blow, the death blow that brought down King Harold at the Battle of Hastings. Equally viable the ships much like Viking long ships spilling King William the Conquerpr's soldiers on to English soil. The Crusades immediate evokes banners bearing crosses and cfrosses carried into battle also the incorrigible sight of men in cumberson armor fighting against 'hordes' of fierce Arabian warriors unembumbered by such silly suits, armed more with their pride & disciplined than with metal skins.
Hope this helps ..

Peace

Conflict between Kings and Popes: Henry VIII divorce decree granted by the Archbishop of Canterbury

Battle of Hastings: Something written in Old French

The Crusades: An imitation captured Ottoman flag or a "relic" that would have been peddled at the time (a sliver of wood from what was supposedly the cross is always a good one).

you mean that you need 3 objects.. maybe:
A glove for the conflict between kings and popes( search about Anagni's slap).
Coat of Maille for battle of Hastings...the determinant heavy norman cavalry was equipped with coat of maille, while saxons had mainly infantry and only a little of cavalry....
About Crusades is a little more complex in my opinion....because of the large number of crusades...
some nominations:
Relics because a large ammount of relics, probably often false, invaded europe right after the crusades....they may represent the religious interest to free the holyland..
Siege Machines, because in the only successful crusade they were decisive during the siege of gerusalem, these machines were built with wood carried in Palestine by marittime republics of Venice and Genoa.
Fighting orders like Templar, Hospitalier and Teutonic ...
Marittime Republics(Venice, Genova, Pisa, Amalfi) they represented the economic-commercial interest to free the holyland...a strategic place for merchants routes...
Incense may represent the religious-spiritual cause of the crusades as well the economic-commercial causes because incense was an important good traded from middle east to europe(produced in Arabia and passing through palestina to reach marittime emporiums on the mediterranean sea)
Probably Incense is the best symbol for crusades...

A scepter ("investiture"), an arrow (legend of King Harold's death), and a model of a windmill (technology from the East introduced by the Crusades). Check it out!
