In astonomy class I believe there was a theory that everything had expanded from a point. That it is extending not condensing. This is not my realm, please help.

Ah ha! I just found out who I heard this from.... 1929 an astronomer Edwin Hubble, who noted that the galaxy is receeding.

Carl Sagan called it "finite but unbounded". So the universe itself is finite not infinite. But since it is unbounded it is free to expand to infinite size but it still contains a finite amount of matter.

The question is will it continue to expand or will it slow down begin to collaspe upon itself and recondense.

Common theory is that at one time the entire universe was a small, almost invisible speck, that for reasons too many to list here suddenly exploded or at least to expand rapidly, and that all things were made with the matter that was there. However in my opinion, there could be no end to the universe, as their theory goes, just for the fact that if it did end, what could be on the other side of where it ends. The universe in the dictionary of Dan, says, that the universe is endless in any and all directions, and contains ALL. Think of it this way, if it ends, do they have a fence to keep wayward space travelers from falling off the edge, or what? What I think is that the tiny, tiny bit of space that can be observed from our most powerful telescopes may indeed appear to be expanding(except for Andromeda, which is heading towards us), but who can know what is 9,000,000,000,000,000,000 light years out farther than we can ever see under any circumstance. Maybe beings from that cluster of galaxies think their universe is only what they can see too, and that it is also expanding. Why is it I feel like Columbus When it only makes any sense, MY way.

Why not .Whether the universe in finite or infinite is a theory .Nobody will ever solve the problem using physics ,mathematics, cosmology and any other form of human reasoning because it is outside of human thinking .There is no tangible evidence to work with so every thing is labeled a theory which our brainy people are happy to accept .Even evolution is still a theory .After all this time why can't it be solved once and for all. Because it can't.

What I was always told a bout this is the universe is like a rubber band, in being that it is a like a circle. And that circles are infinite. Now the thing about a rubber band is that it can be stretched. What I'm saying is that the universe is like a rubber band It is infinite by being a circle (although it may not be a shape) but the circle can still be made larger by stretching it.

If the universe is expanding, then it is not infinite, because an infinite thing cannot get larger. Sounds like you are talking about the big bang, and they use red shifts to prove that things at the edge of the galaxy are moving away from us.

The universe is finite... The "outside of it" (dark matter) is infinite.
