The Republican party split apart during the feud of Roosevelt and Taft leaving the door open for Democrat Wilson to take the election which he did.

Because of the Republican split of Taft and TR in 1912, Wilson's election was practically insured. Wilson received only 43% of the vote but TR received 28% and Taft 23 % and the Socialist Debs received 6%only . With the split in states that would have been close in a 2 man race , Wilson was able to exploit it to his advantage as the electoral college was not close. Wilson received 435 TR 88 and Taft 8.

With the republican party split between Taft (23.2%) and TR (27.4%), this allowed a unified Democrats and Wilson to take the White House, (but not with a majority, as Wilson got 41.9%)
