Because the Bible says sorcery is devilish.Supernatural power that does not come from God comes from Satan.Harry Potter is an indoctrination into witchcraft. If a child reads Harry Potter, it goes to reason that later on he could become attracted to the occult. I don't see how any true Christian could be o.k. with their child growing up to be a sorcerer or witch or Satanist etc. etc.

Christians don't believe in magic, and wizardry is considered a tool of the devil. Harry Potter is seen as a step between children and the devil, and many christians have interpreted the bible to say that an adolescant boy casting spells is against the church. They believe this about many other things as well, but none are really as highly publicised.

Not ALL Christians believe Harry Potter is bad. The question really for me (and what I allow my children to read) is whether or not the reader can discern for themselves between what is right and what is wrong about the subject matter.

In fact, there is plenty of rumor that Rowling is setting up Mr. Potter to eventually become a Christlike character in terms of paying the ultimate sacrifice to protect his friends. Not unlike Aslan in the Chronicles of Narnia. Only time will tell if this rumor turns out to be true.

The Bible is clear in many places that Christians should guard themselves against the types of themes that are explored in the Harry Potter series. The rule in my house is that once you can explain to me WHY the Harry Potter books are dangerous, THEN you can read them.

Jesus Himself said we are to be IN the world and not OF it. See John 17:11-17. So it is toward that end that I will allow my children to be exposed to what the world has to offer...but not until they are mentally prepared for the challenge it presents and they can adequately defend their position.

Christians think Harry Potter is a sorcerer and that sorcery is of the one they call The Prince Of Darkness who persuades people to do things that, in the end, cause their ruin.

well that is the far right which for some reason seems to speak for the entire church when 3/4 of christians are more liberal and are ok with harry potter and believe in global warming & other such issues that the right is not supposed 2 believe in

One can only assume they would like to discourage original thought. Who cares what a children's book is about ( obviously as long as its not "dirty" or violent ) so long as it gets kids to READ. When I think of Harry Potter I think of kids standing in lines not for the latest video game or a frickin Beanie Baby but for a BOOK and I for one think that is amazing in the day and age.

The premise of your question is too categorical. "Christians" encompasses a broad spectrum of people with many significant perspectives on contemporary culture. Not all Christians even have an opinion, and only a small number aren't buying the HP books. I don't see where your question is coming from.

Because the harry potter series/movies is all about witchcraft and wizardy and they think of it as the type of witchcraft that satanists (devil worshipers) practice and etc. even though it's nothing close to that.

Potter takes kids into a world of make believe where they identify with witches, warlocks and magical powers, and the church wants those kids to believe in the churches magic, angels and devils etc.
