I have an Ant hill in my garden, actaully this garden is only an ant hill. The hill was establish before I bought the house. I am willing to plant ant friendly plants, I have had no success with that yet. I am not oppsed to using chemicals on them, if I can get my garden spot back. I don't want to give up on it. THe location is sunny and warm and gets full sun 75% of the day.

Make sure if you get an ant poison that it is something that the ants will take back inside the hill and feed the queen. Otherwise all you'll be doing is killing the gatherers and they can be replaced very easily. I've used poison from Home Depot (sorry, can't remember the brand) and it did the job very well.

Spray lysol or some kind of spray air freshener. The windex you spray on windows can work too. Spray it in the ant hill and on ants. It might be smart to do it at night when they are all in the ant hill. Ants have holes in their abdomen that they breathe through. When you spray something on them, it will clog their breathing holes. They could just hold their breath, but soon they will run out of air and have to breathe in the chemicals. This works on spiders, cockroaches, and most insects that breathe in that way. Good Luck :)

Use the boiling water method . The most common ant poison is diazinon . It's very, very toxic to earthworms *(birds & people too). Not to mention , a lot more expensive than water .

* Diazinon is also used for grub control on lawns . A few years ago , the Cornell turfgrass program ( Norm Hummel & the boys) tested various grub controls for their effects on earthworms . Diazinon was the worst , with an average kill of 87% . (!!!!!!) ( btw, Jerry -I-love-diazinon- Baker is a %&*&^** fool!!)

For fire ants Amdro is an excellent and relatively safe product that is taken into the nest and eventually fed to the queen, killing her and, within a few days, the whole colony. Read the label and follow its directions.

I have never tried this, but a guy at work swore by it. He got rid of the red ants that sting and bite by pouring a small amt of dry sugar down the opening and around their digs. Apparently they feed on the sugar only and die,not enough nutition. Might work!:)

Cucumbers and grits. Sounds crazy but they eat the grits and it draws the water out of their systems killing them. They also take it back to the others to eat. Ants do not like cucumbers if you put slices around a door they will not come in. Both of these methods are safe and non-toxic.

what worked for us was Bug stop, we bought it at BI-Mart.
We also sprayed around the house so those little buggers could not come in. Other than that I would say an exterminator.
good Luck
