Yes,.. viruses can harm your computer, not only virturaly speaking (as in a virus that effects how your operating system works) but also in a very real physical way.
Some viruses can change fan timing to intentionaly overheat and damage componants, and some viruses can flash rom chips and change fundamental programing on how your computer communicates with its devices,...
and a whole lot more,...

the plain answer is no they can not harm your hardware what so ever,,,
they can fill your hard drive up with rubbish, until it is full, and deletes your master boot sector
they can and do change the file formats they can spy on you.
as for damaging the laptop no your safe in that respect
