80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.

I've come to two conclusions recently:

1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.

First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.

Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.

So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.

To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

life, particularly human life is multi functional and multi purpose. At its basest level it is part of the biophysical ecology that helps sustain the planet. At higher levels it is capable of bringing quality essence to the planet and growing the world mind. At higher levels still is the possibility of assisting the growth of the future universe. For the first group there is no real meaning as such; these are the life is what you make it brigade. For the second group the essential feature is a wish to contribute from the standpoint of being thankful for having had the chance to exist, and the instinctive knowledge that life is purposeful. For the third group it is an honour duty that comes from being connected to very high essences. Most dogmatic religion actually belongs in the first as an open mind is essential to the other two.

I think it is a kind of trick question this one.

Why? Life is what you make it. Ignoring or accepting a religion, philosophy or whatever concept life still remains in the hands of the beholder to ultimately determine its meaning. If you question how can this be? Simply look at all great people (evil or otherwise) Hitler took a broken nation back to empire, Stephen Hawking despite the extent of his disability still made it to genius status. But to know the meaning of one's own life (there can never be two exact instances of this meaning each is unique!) you have to know one's self.

Sadly knowing one's self to get that answer is experience. Nothing we know today comes from ease. Morals come from the trouble caused by no self control, poisons are known from poor cave men eating a nice looking berry then dropping dead. It's all trial and error. Then in the end we know.

Once we know who we are. We can determine and decide what is our purpose. It is always impossible to correctly choose the meaning/purpose of something without really knowing what it is. That is Humans for ya!

Life itself! I used to think there was some kind of separate and underlying meaning to life, but then I discovered that life only has a meaning if you live it to the full, otherwise all meaning is lost. So just get out there and enjoy it :-)

The meaning of life is to live, is to be. It is to decide for yourself what you will do. It is you who creates the meaning of YOUR life, not others. You must forge your own backbone in this world, so that no others can decide your fate. Look for answers to everything, so you no longer have to when the time comes for their need. Be who you are and you will know what life is... follow your thoughts, your heart, and your soul, these will lead you to peace.

The basic meaning to me is what your view of the purpose you've conceived your pathway to be.
Life is 'existence' tempered with survival; education and experience.
It is a personal journey to someplace where we are heading as individuals.
Hope that helps!
