"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... until you climb into his skin and walk around in it"

"It was at times like these when I thought my father, who hated guns and had never been to any wars was the bravest man who ever lived."

"Don’t attack something if it hasn’t harmed you"

"I wanted you to see something about her - Iwanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It6's when you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see ith through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do."

"I'd rather you shoot at tin cans in the backyard, but I know you'll go after birds. Shoot at all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird."

"They're certainly entitled to think that, and they're entitled to full respect for their opinions, but before I can live with other fols I've got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience."

the book never mentions a middle name, but presumably he would have had one, as his younger brother was named John Hale Finch, and southern families tended to give all of their children middle names more often than not. i have a data base where i can search pretty much anything written in the book, and there is never a pairing of "atticus" with any other name other than finch or mr. and....all ten of us can't be wrong. it's nice to see so many mockingbird fans, tho.

I would quote the neighbor lady after Atticus shot the mad dog. Also the black leaders who urged Scout to stand when Atticus left the courtroom. Look at how he corrected Scout when the poor country boy ate with them and how he protected Boo Radley. I don't have the book right now but these scenes are so vivid.

BTW, my friends used to call my father "Atticus" because he was kind and wise.

sweetie, Atticus was a character of fiction...go to the book and look at the trial chapters -- Harper Lee is eloquent as she describes his manner in court and the way Scout watches him work...
