My family is also going this summer and hope to have a wonderful time!
I was in San Diego two years ago, in early November. My sister and I went to the Zoo and I highly recommend that, of course. But there is more to do in Balboa Park than just the zoo. Be sure to look into that.
We also enjoyed driving up to the Point Loma Lighthouse and watching the boats come into the harbor. It is a national park, and quite lovely. There is also a National Cemetry nearby that we visited.
Go over to Coronado Island and drive around. Neat place
Be sure to drive up the coast to La Jolla. Beautiful vistas, great shopping and dining and don't miss the Cove where if you are lucky you can see the sea lions!
This time, I plan to go over to Old Town for a day. I understand it has great food and interesting history about the early days of the city.
And I also want to go to the Maritime Museum so I can tour the Star of India, magnificent tall ship.
Not everything I listed is free, but you should be able to find plenty to do!
Have fun.....I know we will!

Beaches... any of them during the week, do paid parking on the weekends.
Balboa Park has something where the second Tuesday of the month has a free museum.
Ferry Landing at Coronado is free and similar to Seaport Village, plus you get a great view of downtown and can ride a ferry across the bay for a few bucks.
Encinitas... has a free garden with a great ocean view, near Swami beach.
Old Town is free to walk around.
Embarcadero if there's a concert going on that night.
Petco Park, if you just get the basic ticket is just a few bucks to get in and walk around.

Make sure you head to Coronado. It is a cute little beach town with great restraunts. If you head over to the ferry landing in Corondo you can take the ferry over to Seaport village and downtown San Diego.
Balboa park and Old Town are also great places to visit.
You can also go into Tijuana if you want...

Jim Croce's wife Ingrid and his son Jim have a jazz club in the Gas Lamp district (I think that's what its called..) I would recommend that totally...and its baseball season - Padres play at Petco, right in town - VERY CONVENIENT you can walk...plus walking along the pier and eating chocolate ice cream is essential. If you have a rental - cross the bridge to Coronado or take the trolley and then go to the Hotel del Coronado - insanely elegant old-world charm hotel, go to the deck and have a daiquiri!!! My favorite thing to do!!!

There are tons of free places to go you just have to do some searching. And there are lots of inexpensive museums and aquariums and all that stuff. The zoo and the wild animal park are relatively inexpensive but sea world is nice and expensive but worth it! Check my blog I have a few great little places on there! Hope that helps!

Definitely spend some time exploring Balboa Park. It's one of my favorite areas of San Diego. Beautiful. Old Town is fun too, you get a good taste of old western and mexican-american culture.

belmont park is a cute little amusement park on the beach. take some roller blades or a bike and cruise the boardwalk.
also, tour the lighthouse, I can't remember the name of it, but it's really gorgeous.
the beach is free. pack a cooler and some sunblock and make a day of it.
