I don't mind being called Asian or Pacific Islander.

But it does annoy me when filipinos[mainly in the states] get mad when people call them Asians, and would rather be called pacific islanders. What's so wrong with being called Asian? The Philippine's IS in Asia. Same thing goes with being called a Pacific Islander. The islands ARE located in the pacific.

My ex husband was always being asked if he was Hawaiian or of the local native tribe, the Haida Gwai.

He was from Luzon. However he was also very tall for a Filipino at 6 foot, and sturdily built like a South Pacific or Pacific North Coast Native.

We would be sitting in a cafe eating lunch discussing baby names and little old ladies would just come up and say, "We have been trying to figure out what nationality you are."
They always guessed Hawaiian.

He never cared so long as it was just innocent curiostiy. Our daughters are spectacularly beautiful and indeed got the best of both parents. Again they could pass as almost any mixed race but they also get asked what tribe they are from quite often also.

It's all good.

I dont get offended, but I prefer to be called Filipino. I personally dont feel like I am asian. I am brown in skin and dont look like the stereotype of "asian". Yeah, the Philippines is in Asia, but are Hawaiians considered American since they are 1 of the 50 states. No, they are considered Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, never American. They actually have different names for people from the mainland and Americans. Also, Filipinos dont have much in common with those that are considered asian. For example, we have nothing in common with Loatians, Vietnamese, Korean, etc. Nothing in common. You dont go around calling a person from spain, european, they are spanish. Also, I dont call people from India, asians, cus they are Indians. I dont like to place myself under one name with others because I want people to know and understand that Filipinos have a very diverse culture and seek information on our rich history. If we call ourselves asians, they will all think that we are all chinese because most of the world only knows or views that "asian" world as only chinese. I represent, I dont assimilate!

Filipinos are Southeast Asians, basically like Malaysians and Indonesians. Pacific Islanders are the "Natives" of Polynesia,Micronesia and Melanesia...particular there are Pacific Islanders who could have Asian constructive components, yet they're nevertheless seen as Pacific Islanders in the event that they're natives.
