Is your computer a few years old? It seems that your device is a USB 2.0 device, but the USB connection on your computer is an older USB 1.0 or 1.1. The computer is informing you that the device would work faster if it were plugged into a USB 2.0 port.
You could upgrade your computer it USB 2.0 by installing a new card with 2.0 ports on it.
Your device will still work fine without an upgrade, but file transfers will be slower. If speed isn't a critical issue, I recommend keeping the present system and allowing file transfers plenty of time to complete. My guess that within a year or two, you'll be thinking of updating your computer system with a new computer which will feature the newest, fastest gadgets available.

Either There Are New Drivers that are missing or your USB ports are the old 1.1. If you need 2.0 and you feel comfortable with opening your computer you can Buy a PCI USB 2.0 card off of ebay. Some on ebay can be 20 to thirty bucks but there are no name ones that are around 5 bucks with shipping; they work just as well.

Usually this means that the port to which you are connecting the device is not a USB 2.0 port (which operates at 400+ mbps) but is a USB 1.x port (which operates at 12 mbps). If your PC is older, it is probably not a USB 2.0 port. However, you can buy an add-on card to install internally that will give you USB 2.0 ports. You can probably find them at Circuit City or Best Buy and definitely online.

If the specifications for the computer do not include a USB 2.0 port, then you can buy an add-in card that has several USB 2.0 ports on it and put that into an empty card slot with the USB connectors sticking out in the back.

Are you sure the USB ports on your computer are 2.0? Sometimes not all of them are; you can try different ones.
If that's not the issue, then the next possibility is that you don't have USB 2.0 drivers. This is common if you make your own computers, or if you reformat your HD. Sometimes the drivers won't install if you haven't installed Service Pack 2 first because before the Service Packs came out, there was no USB 2.0 support. (If you're using Windows XP, that is). Make sure your Windows is current; then try re-installing the drivers.

Everyone so far seems to have missed your statement that you ARE using a USB 2.0 port. My question is (don't hit me!) are you sure it's 2.0?

Simple really. If you computer has High speed USB 2.0 ports you should use those. Otherwise youll have to get a High speed USB card (like $25). It is so worth it too! USB 1 is like 12 mb/s where as USB2 is more like 450MB/s
