If you have DSL installed on your PC and want to also use it on your Laptop buy a Hub/Switch, they dont cost much, plug it into your DSL Modem, then plug your PC and Laptop into the Hub, sign-on using your PC and on your Laptop open Explorer, after that you can turn your PC off, the problem is the DSL Programs from the providers may not run on older computers, but using DSL will work just fine on an older Laptop, some may require you buy a PCMCIA card like Netgear that is plug and play or Lynksys Card and a cable, but if your Laptop is to old you may not be able to use Wireless because the older Laptops PCMICA slot is 2.0 or the CPU is under 300hz, this is only for wireless....

There are external cards that you can buy that have an Ethernet port. I believe that your DSL modem would probably have an Ethernet output, instead of the dial up phone line. If you were to obtain one of these cards, it would go where you would normally put a regular wireless network card.
An alternative would be to actually set up a wireless network. You'd need a router, however to do this.

What doesn't work? Need details to give you the right answer...
If it's running Windows that doesn't support you router software, you need to upgrade it's OS.
If it's not got an ethernet card, you need a PCMCIA or Cardbus Ethernet adapter. Or maybe a USB ethernet adapter if it's got USB2. They can be ethernet over wires or ethernet over wifi adapters... depends what your router offers.
If it's connected but just not working... need to know how it's not working (what is not working / what error messags you get).

you will get software and cables for files move, and this may be nicely worth pondering once you've huge quantities to move. yet commonly a USB thumb force, or a writable CD are a lot less annoying and bigger accessible for familiar applications.
