Electron tunneling has little to do with transmitting electricity and a lot to do with very local tiny effects that permit computer like switching on a very small scale.

Oh, you are referring to quantum tunneling. ;)

Well, the one I think about is the Scanning Tunneling Microscope. STM....that can image the surface of things down to the atomic level.
